About Tom Decker

Affordable Housing Advocate & Builder

For over forty years I have been a real estate owner, agent, broker, residential developer and builder of affordable homes.  In 1989,  I was elected president of the Napa/Solano Apartment Owners Association.  During my presidency, I designed, introduced and implemented a private market rent-to-own solution to affordable housing in our county. I am the Regional Director for BAM Homes located in Antioch, California.  For twenty-five years I’ve been placing high-end manufactured homes on private residential building lots and manufactured home parks in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.  In my capacity as the broker of record for BAM Homes, I’m a member of the Delta Association of Realtors as well as the Santa Cruz County Association of Realtors, SCCAR. In October 2021, I opened our first BAM Homes regional offices in downtown Boulder Creek.  I committed myself to rebuilding homes for our friends, neighbors and long time members of our community who lost their homes in the CZU Fire (See BAM Homes Hopes to Ease Rebuilding Woes)

Music & Performing Arts Advocate & Supporter

I was raised on my family’s farm in rural Western New York, the eldest son of nine children. My mother was a classically trained musician.  She taught all her children in our youth to know and appreciate that live music and the performing arts are an essential part of a richly lived life.  My mother instilled in me a deep love of the arts and a strong desire to support them.  After serving ten years on the board of directors of the Vallejo Symphony Association,  I was elected president of the VSA in 1999 (vallejosymphony.org).  During my presidency we raised enough funds from private donors to take our entire symphony for a three week concert tour of Japan. In 2003, I was a founding director of the Fetterly Playhouse Theatre for the Performing Arts. Over the next few years we raised enough funds from private donors to build a performing arts center in an empty commercial building.  Today the Fetterly Theatre that we built is now the home to the Vallejo Arts Foundation, the Vallejo Symphony Association, the Fetterly Gallery, the Napa/Solano Health Project and the Vallejo Music Theatre (vallejomusictheatre.org)

Public Charter School Advocate & Builder

In 1989, I was a founding director of MIT Academy Charter Middle and High School.  I negotiated a twenty year lease on fifteen acres of unused public land for one dollar per year.  On that property we built MIT Academy, the first public charter school in Vallejo. Today MIT Academy, the school that we opened under the bleachers of the Solano County Fairgrounds in 1999, has grown to include five schools including the Griffin Academies (gtaschools.org).  MIT Academy is the highest rated public school in Vallejo.  It provides students with the state of the art technology as well as offering an outstanding music and digital arts program. Tuition is free to all students and 90% of our MIT graduates are accepted directly into four year colleges and universities.Mare Island Technology Academy and the Griffin Academies are rated among the top 20% of the most diverse public schools in the nation with a minority enrollment of 93%.

Education, Teaching & Family

While working on my MBA in Organizational Behavior at BYU, I  was Steven R. Covey’s research assistant. I was fortunate enough to be able to work along with him on the initial research for his best selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which to date has sold over 15 million copies world wide.I have been the Sunday school president and a Sunday school teacher at my church in Ben Lomond for many years.  My wife, Maria and I have six children and nineteen grandchildren.

My pledge to you

Over my life I’ve been involved in promoting the arts, providing education options for minority communities and building affordable housing. In my youth I was taught that truly amazing things can happen when individuals strive to accomplish greatly. Should you choose to elect me as your next 5th District County Supervisor, I pledge to you to continue to work tirelessly to make the 5th District a better, more responsive and an overall wonderful place for you and your family to live, prosper and enjoy.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
